Ranked among the top 10 programs nationally since 1998 when the U.S. News & World Report began ranking counseling and counseling psychology programs housed in colleges of education.

Always housed in the College of Education, the Counselor Education program granted our first Ph.D. in 1956. Prior to the late 1970s, the Counselor Education department housed Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, and Special Education. Currently, Counselor Education is embedded in the School of Human Development and Organizational Studies in Education (HDOSE) along with Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel in Higher Education, and Research and Evaluation Methods.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Counselor Education is to prepare exemplary counselor educators, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, school counselors, and program administrators who generate, use, and disseminate knowledge about human development and human relating to enrich the quality of life for all people, and who collaborate with others to solve critical personal, family, educational, social, and vocational problems in a diverse global community.
